How do I install Chirpy on my Mac?
- Download the disk image. Download Chirpy.dmg from chirpy.pro. The file is 7.8 MB and is notarized by Apple, so macOS Gatekeeper will open it without warnings.
- Drag Chirpy to Applications. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag the Chirpy icon into your Applications folder, then eject the disk image.
- Open Chirpy. Launch Chirpy from Applications. It runs as a menu-bar app, so its icon appears in the menu bar rather than in the Dock.
- Grant Accessibility permission. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, and turn on the switch next to Chirpy. Chirpy needs this permission to read the text of incoming notifications so it can match them against your rules.
- Silence the source app's own sound. In System Settings, go to Notifications, select the app you are customising, such as Slack, and set its alert sound to None. Otherwise you hear the app's default sound on top of Chirpy's.
- Create your first rule. In Chirpy, add a rule that matches an app, channel, person, or keyword, pick a sound, preview it, and save. Chirpy plays that sound the next time a matching notification arrives.
Why does Chirpy need Accessibility permission?
Chirpy reads the text of notifications through the macOS Accessibility API. That is what lets it tell a message in #prod-alerts apart from one in #random. All matching happens on your Mac. Chirpy does not connect to the Slack, Teams, or Discord APIs, and notification content never leaves the machine. See the privacy policy for the full statement.
