What apps does Chirpy work with? Every app on your Mac

If it shows up in macOS Notification Center, you can give it a sound. Slack, email, calendar, your messaging apps, anything that pings you.

Every Notification Sounds the Same

Ping. Your manager needs you.
Ping. Someone reacted in #random.
Ping. Production is down.

Same sound. Every time. You have to stop what you're doing and check.

With Chirpy, You Hear the Difference

Why do people choose Chirpy?

Know Urgency Instantly

A prod alert sounds different from a meme in #random. Hear priority without checking your screen.

Stay Focused Longer

Stop context-switching for low-priority messages. Only break focus when the sound tells you it matters.

Your Rules, Your Sounds

Create rules by channel, person, keyword, or app. Assign any sound. Adjust volume per rule.

Native, Lightweight, Private

A 7.8 MB menu bar app. Runs locally on macOS. Doesn't read your messages or connect to Slack, Discord, or Teams APIs.

Finally — a way to customize your Slack notifs! Such a great tool, no problems installing or getting it to work. Instructions were clear and concise.

Create Notification Rules

Set custom sounds for channels, DMs, keywords, or specific people.
One sound for your manager, another for support tickets, a third for #random.

Upload or Choose Sounds

Bring your own audio files or pick from 72+ curated sounds: From to .

Adjust Volume Per Rule

Fine-tune the volume for each rule, so a #prod-alert can ring loud while #random gently taps your attention. Boost up to 200% for the rules that really need to cut through.

Smart Matching

Go beyond simple keywords. Combine conditions with AND / OR and use wildcards (*) to match exactly what you want, like #prod-* OR #incident-*, or #alerts AND deploy.

...and many more

  • Speak notifications aloud instead of playing a sound, pick a voice per rule
  • Exclude notifications with a NOT keyword, e.g. "deploy" but not "failed"
  • Generate a spoken sound from typed text and save it to your library
  • Run a Shortcuts.app shortcut instead of playing a sound
  • Works with every app on your Mac, not just Slack and Teams
  • Keyboard navigation for the rules list
  • Built-in diagnostics to verify your setup, with "Create rule for this" to turn a missed notification straight into a rule
  • Light, Dark, or Automatic appearance in Preferences, matches your Mac

Love that you can preview sounds straight from the list before committing to a rule — such a small detail, but it makes dialing in the right audio effortless.

The per-rule volume control is a really thoughtful touch, so a loud work alert doesn't blast over a quiet DM ping. Glad it's all local too.

Way more useful than a global mute. Runs entirely local, no accounts to create before you can try it.

That's exactly what I've been using it for. I also use it for per-channel notifications since Slack doesn't allow that. Been great for a week now.

This feels like something that should have been there all along. Frustrating not being able to tell which app is posting a notification if they all sound the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chirpy assigns custom notification sounds to your Mac notifications. Instead of the same generic ping for every message, you create rules that match a channel, person, keyword, or app to any sound you want. When a notification arrives, Chirpy plays the sound you chose, so you hear what matters without checking your screen.

Drag the app into your Applications folder. When you open it, grant accessibility access so Chirpy can read your notifications. That happens locally; nothing leaves your Mac. Then create a rule: pick an app, add a keyword or condition, choose a sound, and you're set. Setup takes about two minutes.

Stop Treating Every Ping Like It Matters

Try Chirpy free for 3 days. If custom notification sounds don't improve your focus, just delete it.

What is Chirpy?

Chirpy is a native macOS menu bar app that plays a different notification sound based on rules you write: per Slack channel, per contact, per app, or per keyword. It runs entirely on your Mac and costs $19.99 as a one-time purchase. It requires macOS 13 (Ventura) or later and works on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

How do custom notification sounds work on a Mac?

macOS gives you a single system alert sound shared by every app, plus an on/off switch per app. That is the entire native feature set. There is no built-in way to tell one Slack channel apart from another by ear. Chirpy adds that layer: it reads incoming notifications through the macOS Accessibility API, matches the text against your rules, and plays the sound you assigned. Rules combine with AND/OR and support wildcards, so #prod-* can match every production channel at once. Typical rules people write:

  • cha-ching.mp3 for #deals, so you hear revenue land without opening Slack.
  • urgent.mp3 for your manager, one sound reserved for the person you can't miss.
  • hush.mp3 for #random, or no sound at all while keeping the banner.
  • alert.mp3 for prod issues, louder, at a higher per-rule volume.
  • party.mp3 for #wins, because some notifications should feel good.

Every rule is evaluated locally. Chirpy does not connect to the Slack, Teams, or Discord APIs and notification content never leaves your Mac. Step-by-step instructions for individual apps live in the per-app notification guides, setting a different notification sound for each app covers what macOS can and can't do natively, and the full feature list covers the rule engine in detail.

Which apps do people set up first?

Most setups start with per-channel Slack sounds, then Chrome and the web apps living in it, then the rest of the chat stack: Microsoft Teams, Discord, Messages, Outlook, and WhatsApp. Developers tend to add one more: a sound for when Claude or another AI tool finishes, so a long task can run while you work elsewhere. If Slack has gone silent on you instead, start with the Slack notification sound fix list.
